PROVO, Utah (AP) -- Trent Plaisted scored 19 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to lead BYU to an 80-61 win over Southern Utah Friday night.
Plaisted scored 10 of the Cougars first 12 points in a 23-6 BYU run to begin the game. BYU (3-1) never trailed and led by as many as 21 points in the first half when Lee Cummard hit two free throws with 1:13 in the period.
The first half was full of turnovers -- SUU had 15 and BYU 14.
The Cougars out-rebounded SUU 22-8 by halftime and finished the game with a 39-24 rebounding advantage, including 17 on the offensive boards, which led to 24 second chance points for the Cougars.
The Cougars extended their lead in the second half with a 15-0 run over a 6:25 span thanks largely to 8 consecutive points by Keena Young. The run ended with BYU holding a 61-30 lead with 12:15 remaining.
The Thunderbirds did cut the lead to 19 at 74-55 with 3:38 remaining on a shot by David Marek, but couldn't pull any closer down the stretch.
