FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) -- Jaycee Carroll scored 27 points and Utah State defeated Centenary 77-71 today in the opening round of the B-P Top of the World Classic.

Durrall Peterson opened the game with two three-pointers and Carroll scored 17 as the Aggies (1-1) took a 46-26 lead into intermission.

Centenary (1-2), which shot 15-for-16 from the free thrown line, fought back with an 18-4 run, including seven points by Bryan Bauman, to cut the lead to 50-44 with ten minutes left to play.

The Aggies responded with a ten-four spurt, capped by a three-pointer by Carroll with 6:18 remaining. Centenary hit three 3-pointers in the last minute for the final margin.

Utah State dominated the boards 29-16 with Michael Earl pulling down eight.

Chase Adams had 17 points and Bauman had 14 for the Gents.

Peterson finished with eleven points for the Aggies.
