SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah student makes it to the finals of the National Geographic Bee, but student from Texas takes the top prize.
Kennen Sparks from Farmington was a top 10 finalist, but Wednesday morning, it was 13-year-old Eric Yang from Texas who won the National Geographic Bee in Washington and a $25,000 college scholarship.
Sparks won a $500 scholarship.
The second-place winner and recipient of a $15,000 college scholarship was Oregon's Arjun Kandaswamy.
Third place and a $10,000 scholarship went to North Carolina's Shantan Krovvidi.
Students representing Arizona, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, North Carolina, Oregon, and Wisconsin also made it to the finals
Alex Trebek of "Jeopardy!" hosted the competition.
In earlier rounds, one student from every U.S. state and territory, along with a student from a military family, competed for the top geography prize.
According to a survey of the 55 students, President Barack Obama tops the list of people they admire (besides their parents). And several aspire to political office.
