My friend lives in Cedar City and she believes it is cooler in summer and warmer in winter there than SLC area, is she right?

**********************************************************

Cedar city does have awesome weather. While still in Southern Utah, it doesn't get nearly as warm as a few other locations. The warmest temperature at the airport was 105 degrees in 1989 while SLC's warmest is 107.

We can look up monthly averages for Cedar City and Salt Lake at the Western Region Climate Center. In June, July and August, the average high temperatures in Cedar City are; 83.6, 90.1, 87.6. In SLC, our summer averages are: 82.2, 90.6, 88.7.

If you consider those months to be "summer" then averaging the numbers together yields that Cedar City's summer average is 87.1 and SLC is at 87.167. So if you are just considering day time high temperatures both cities are about the same.

BUT if you look at the mean temperatures for both highs and lows you'll find that Cedar City is actually a little cooler. The summer average temperature there is 70.8 and SLC's summer average is 73.9 so yes, it's a little cooler in Cedar City in the summertime.

During the winter the averages are similar, but SLC has much colder day time average temperatures. The winter average temperature (highs and lows together) shows that Cedar City is at 31.6 and SLC comes in at 31.3. However, the average high in January in SLC is 37 degrees and in Cedar City it's 42.2 degrees.

So your friend is for the most part correct. Cedar City is warmer in the winter than SLC and a little cooler in the summer. But Cedar City can still get lots of snow, last year, there was one storm that dropped over 20 inches!
