Sam Penrod reportingA woman is dead after she was hit on I-15 near Springville last night. The Highway Patrol says she may have been trying to flee the scene of a fender bender that occurred moments before.
The woman, 26-year-old Patti Spaulding of Springville, was involved in a fender bender wreck on 4th South overpass just before 6pm Tuesday night.
For some reason, she left the scene on foot. Troopers say it may have been because she was at fault in that crash and did not have a valid driver's license.
She then tried to run down off the overpass and across the freeway to get away. That is when she was struck and killed by a car going southbound on I-15.
Troopers say they are now waiting for toxicology reports on the victim.
Lt. Al Christianson, Utah Highway Patrol: "We suspect there may be a possibility of drugs involved in this, either prior drugs wherever she lost her license or she may have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol, which have her a cause to run from the accident scene initially."
The driver of the car that hit the woman suffered some minor injuries. The area was closed down to traffic for a couple of hours during the investigation.
Troopers say it will likely take a few weeks until they have more answers about why the woman ran into the freeway.
