An 18th century painting by Spanish master Francisco de Goya was stolen while being taken to New York's Guggenheim museum for an exhibition, the museum has said.

"Children with a Cart," a 1776 painting from the collection of the Toledo Museum of Art in Ohio, disappeared while en route from Toledo to the Guggenheim, the museums said in a joint statement released Monday.

A reward of up to 50,000 dollars is being offered by the insurer for information leading to the painting's recovery, the statement said. The Federal Bureau of Investigation is leading the probe into the theft.

"At the time of the theft, the painting was traveling through the Scranton, Pennsylvania area and was in the care of a professional art transport provider," the statement said.

"Children with a Cart" was to be included in an exhibition of about 140 paintings by Spanish masters opening Sunday titled "Spanish Painting from El Greco to Picasso: Time, Truth, and History."

The painting is insured for just over one million dollars and "would be virtually impossible to sell and therefore has no value on the open market," the museums said.

No further details were released to protect the investigation, the statement said.
