SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Majority Republicans in the Utah Legislature kept their No. 1 leaders in the House and Senate.

Senate President John Valentine -- an Orem Republican -- and House Speaker Greg Curtis -- Sandy Republican -- were re-elected to another two-year term by their GOP colleagues last night.

The changes take effect in January. They mean the Senate's top two Republicans will be from Utah County with the promotion of Senator Curtis Bramble, a Provo Republican, to majority leader.

Bramble earned a reputation as an arm-twister during his six years in the Utah Senate.

In winning the post for majority leader, Bramble replaces a more conciliatory Senator Pete Knudsen, a Brigham City Republican.

Bramble ran on a promise to play tougher with House Republicans in negotiations that are necessary to get anything done at the Utah Capitol.

House Republicans, meanwhile, selected Representative Dave Clark, a Santa Clara Republican, as their majority leader under Curtis.

Clark promised to be more statesmanlike.
