(KSL News) -- Nearly 40% of Utah women will be in an abusive relationship at some point in their lives. Today a group gathered in Salt Lake City to raise awareness about the issue.

October is domestic violence awareness month. The Y-W-C-A wrapped up its Week Without Violence events with a walk. The Y-W-C-A says awareness is key, and people are reporting abuse more often now.

Melinda Pettingill, YWCA: "This is a huge issue in the state of Utah and its something that we need to be aware of and address as a societal issue not as a woman's issue."

Recent studies show about 36 percent of Utah women will experience an abusive relationship.
