Amanda Butterfield and Tonya Papanikolas reporting Police have identified the woman who was hit and killed yesterday in a Bountiful crosswalk as 74-year-old Joan Marchant.
Police say the woman was identified after a family member saw the report on the news and called in.
Lt. Randy Pickett, Bountiful Police Depart.: "She lives about a block away from where the accident happened."
Joanne Marchant was walking home from an eye doctor appointment when she was hit. A 17-year old from Bountiful High School was driving south down Orchard and did not see Marchant in the crosswalk. The driver was going about 35 miles an hour when she hit and killed the 74-year old.
Police say Marchant did not have any ID on her so they weren't able to immediately identity her. Marchant had left her purse at the doctor's, so all police had to identify her were her clothing.
The teen who hit her, apologized through the comment board on ksl.com. The 17 year old driver says she's very sorry and takes full responsibility. On ksl.com's comment board she goes on to say:
"I will never be able to explain how sorry I am to her family, I have never felt as badly as I do now. I can't explain how bad I feel for hurting her the way I did -- I just hope you can forgive me... I know I never will for what I've done, but I am very very sorry."
Marchant's grandkids posted their messages earlier. In the midst of their own grief, every one of them offered their sympathy to the driver. Melissa writes:
"As difficult as it is to lose such a sweet and noble lady, my heart aches for the girl who hit her."
Cyndi writes:
"My grandma was a noble, faithful woman who would be the first one to put her arms around this young lady and hold her."
It'll will be about a week before the Bountiful City Attorney's Office determines if they will charge the teenage driver.
