CHICAGO, Oct 12, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- U.S. Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., outlines a lofty political view in his new book and laments an "empathy deficit" in the United States, a Chicago report says.
"The Audacity of Hope" is likely to spur new speculation that Illinois' junior senator is contemplating a bid for the White House, the Chicago Tribune says, though there is no direct reference to a campaign.
The book tends to provide a personal look at the senator and his family with self-deprecating moments of humility as well as his stand on major issues such as Iraq, energy independence, terrorism and healthcare.
He says a stronger sense of empathy in the United States is needed to tilt politics "in favor of those people who are struggling in this society."
Obama has planned a nationwide book tour.
