PHILADELPHIA, Oct 5, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- Singer Barbra Streisand kicked off her first tour in 12 years at Philadelphia's Wachovia Center, using the opportunity to poke fun at George W. Bush.
Her comeback show featured a skit where an actor, playing the president, said, "I'm concerned about the national debt, so I'm selling Canada," and "If I cared about the polls I would have run for president of Poland."
The 64-year-old singer and longtime liberal activist said she came out of retirement in order to raise money for her foundation. The foundation supports a large range of causes, spanning from the environment and education to healthcare.
Tickets to Streisand's show were highly desirable among fans, with seats priced from $100 to $750.
Neither money nor driving time could stop the Streisand fans.
"It's only three hours," retiree Gladys Ullman told Billboard.com of the trip from her home in Cortlandt, N.Y. "And this is Barbra Streisand."
"We tried to get tickets for New York City (shows), but they were sold out," explained Corine Marlisa, 35, who drove with her husband to the show. "She's phenomenal."
