(KSL News) A day hiker in Davis County suffered serious injuries after she fell off of a canyon side and into a river.

Authorities say two sisters were hiking on Holbrook Canyon Trail when one of them lost her footing and fell in the water. Rescue crews considered calling in a Life Flight helicopter to hoist her out but were able to use their own ropes instead.

Authorities said the sisters were prepared for a winter day hike. "[They] made sure they had a cell phone, she had somebody with her; those are the things we recommend. Wear warm clothes," said Capt. John Hauze, with South Davis Metro Fire.

The injured hiker was in stable condition when she was taken to the hospital.
