RUPERT, Idaho (AP) -- Fierce winds and blowing snow have closed U.S. Interstate 84 from its junction with U.S. Interstate 86 east of Rupert to the Utah state line.
The Idaho Transportation Department says the closure began Monday due to low visibility and snowdrifts which made the route impassable.
Numerous vehicles, including semi-trucks and trailers, had gotten stuck along the highway before it was closed.
The state highway agency suggests using the alternate route, from U.S. Interstate 15 from Tremonton, Utah, to Pocatello and then to I-86 across southern Idaho.
Travelers are advised to check the 511 Traveler Services system on the Web at www.511.idaho.gov or dial 511 for the latest highway conditions.
