SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A University of Utah study says that within a generation, the state's 60-and-older crowd will be larger than the school-age population.

It's part of a dramatic shift in the state's demographics noted by the university's Bureau of Economic and Business Research.

The study says that in the coming years, Utah will become more diverse. Researchers estimate that 30 percent of the state's population will be made up of racial or ethnic minorities.

The state's oldest ranks will also grow, the study says, because of longer life expectancy and an influx of baby boomers.

Researchers say the shifts in Utah are similar to those happening across the country.
