RIVERDALE — A man is in custody after authorities say he "deliberately" crashed into a pair of squad cars during a pursuit that ended with police shooting at the vehicle Sunday night.
Carter Dean Edelman, 19, was arrested shortly before 10 p.m. and booked into Weber County Jail early Monday morning on suspicion of DUI, reckless driving, aggravated assault, unlawful detention and several other possible charges in relation to the incident, according to jail records.
The chain of events began when Weber County sheriff's deputies responded to a report of a "potential DUI incident" in Uintah, according to Weber County Sheriff's Sgt. Terance Lavely. He wrote in a jail report that a resident alerted police that a man, identified as Edelman, was drunk and had left a home in a blue BMW.
Deputies located a vehicle matching the description in the report by 1900 West and Riverdale Road in Roy; however, the driver fled when deputies tried to pull the vehicle over, he said. He added that the driver "deliberately" crashed into a pair of squad cars during the pursuit.
"At one point, the BMW entered a cul-de-sac and officers tried to block the road. Despite efforts, the BMW collided with a marked and occupied law enforcement vehicle, causing damage to its front right side," the report states. "The BMW continued to evade law enforcement, reaching speeds near 100 mph."
The pursuit ended outside of a strip mall on Riverdale Road in Riverdale, where the driver crashed into another squad car, Lavely said. He added that officers fired shots into the vehicle before the vehicle was "successfully disabled" and Edelman was taken into custody.
No serious injuries were reported among the officers or two occupants in the BMW, authorities said.
Edelman had "a strong odor of alcohol" on his breath and struggled to maintain his balance after he was taken to the Weber County Sheriff's Office for questioning, Lavely wrote in the jail record. The report states that Edelman also told investigators that he had "consumed numerous alcoholic beverages and had used a THC pen."
A second person in the vehicle told police that they attempted to leave the vehicle when they saw the flashing police lights, but Edelman said "you don't have time" and sped off, the jail report states. Police said he was driving on a denied license.
Jail records do not show whether Edelman has retained legal representation.
Multiple police agencies assisted in the case. It wasn't immediately clear which agency fired at the BMW, but the Weber County Attorney's Office Critical Incident Team was brought in to investigate the incident because at least one officer fired their weapon.
