SPANISH FORK — A Mapleton man is accused of stabbing his father multiple times, including in the eye.
Jay Terry Hoskins, 30, was charged Wednesday in 4th District Court with attempted murder, a first-degree felony.
On Saturday, Hoskins was at his parents' home in Spanish Fork when he allegedly got into an argument with his father during which he claimed he was being "tortured" by the Central Intelligence Agency, according to charging documents.
"(Hoskins) went into the garage and his father followed when he heard banging. (Hoskins), holding a knife, accused his father of being involved with the CIA. The father grabbed a broomstick to use to defend himself if needed, and the defendant came towards his father with the knife. The father hit the defendant with a broomstick to get him away, at which point both individuals ended up on the floor. (Hoskins) stabbed his father in the eye and twice in the back," the charges state.
A neighbor told police he heard Hoskins yelling "I hope you die," according to the charges. The father was taken to a local hospital.
After the stabbing, Hoskins drove away but was located and arrested by the Utah Highway Patrol on I-15.
Detectives also obtained a voice message Hoskins allegedly left with a family friend in California following the attack.
"Jay stated, 'it's really bad actually, it's criminal bad,'" according to a police booking affidavit. "Jay goes on to speak of a CIA program which (his father) had put him in. He stated the guys have been torturing him for over a year now. Jay advised this has finally taken its toll."
Hoskins continues to say in the voicemail he didn't want to hurt anyone and "then speaks of the CIA torture again almost as an excuse for his behavior. Jay ends by expressing his care for for his friend, and states, 'if you see my mom, tell her I am sorry,'" the affidavit states.
Police also spoke with Hoskins' mother, who told detectives her son started showing signs of mental illness a few months ago.
"Jay's mental illness was further described as hearing and seeing things that weren't there. Believing things were happening that weren't. They mentioned Jay always talks about the CIA and how they're after him. As a result, they stated Jay sees a physiatrist, and has been put on medication. They reported that Jay has not been taking his medication appropriately and acts out," according to the affidavit.
