CEDAR CITY — A man was arrested Monday after police say he stabbed another man multiple times after getting into a fight over a speaker.

Bryan Burkes, 41, was booked into the Iron County Jail for investigation of aggravated assault resulting in serious injury, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon by a restricted person and interfering with an arrest.

Police say the incident began when two men confronted Burkes about a stolen speaker. One of the victims claimed his speaker was stolen and that Burkes had it, according to a police booking affidavit. The verbal argument, however, turned violent.

"Bryan then pulled (out) a folding pocket knife and stated that if they did not back off, he would stab them," according to a police affidavit.

One of the men then punched Burkes in the mouth, which prompted Burkes to stab the other man multiple times, the affidavit states.

"He threatened to stab the other adult male and then followed through with this threat by actually stabbing the other adult male multiple times, only stopping this assault after the blade of the knife broke off and was lodged in body of the victim," according to the arrest report.

After his friend was stabbed, the other man separated Burkes from the victim. After police arrived, they said Burkes " became very agitated" that he was being arrested.

"He began to try to turn around on the officers escorting him and was flailing his body around, resisting our efforts to safely escort him to the patrol vehicle," the affidavit says.

An updated condition on the man who was stabbed was not immediately available.

According to court records, Burkes pleaded guilty in October to attempted possession of a firearm by a restricted person and drug possession and was sentenced to 18 months of probation. Prior to that, he was convicted of drug distribution and sentenced in 2010 to a term of one to 15 years at the Utah State Prison, a sentence that a judge ordered to run consecutive with a 2009 drug possession conviction for which he was sentenced to up to five years in prison.
