CHICAGO (AP) — The Elite Eight round of the NCAA Tournament wraps up today, with the winners heading to the Final Four next weekend in New Orleans. Today's action begins in Chicago, where top-seeded Kansas plays 10th-seeded Miami. Jayhawks coach Bill Self is just 3-7 in his career in regional finals. Miami coach Jim Larrañaga (la-ra-NAY'-gah) directed 11th-seeded George Mason to a memorable Final Four run in 2006. He has seven 20-win seasons in his 11 years at Miami. The winner will face Villanova in the national semifinal.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Saint Peter's has knocked off Kentucky, Murray State and Purdue and will try for another NCAA Tournament upset today against No. 8 seed North Carolina. The little New Jersey school is the first 15 seed to make the Elite Eight and is now aiming for the Final Four. The Tar Heels have been a pretty good story themselves, playing their way off the tournament bubble late in the regular season and knocking out Marquette, Baylor and UCLA. The winner of tonight's game in Philadelphia gets a trip to New Orleans next weekend to face Duke.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — The University of Memphis and men's basketball coach Penny Hardaway have been accused of serious violations of NCAA rules, including failing to cooperate with an investigation. That's according to The Daily Memphian and The Commercial Appeal. The newspapers reported that they obtained copies of notices of allegations from an investigation by the Independent Accountability Resolution Process. The newspapers also obtained a response from the university denying the allegations. An amended notice of allegations the university received in July 2021 says the infractions include four Level I and two Level II violations, considered the most serious NCAA infractions.
PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — The 32 NFL team owners will deal with some significant issues at their meetings this week in Florida. Two proposals to change overtime rules are particularly intriguing. Tennessee has recommended that both teams possess the ball in overtime unless the team receiving the kickoff scores a touchdown and a 2-point conversion. That would end the game. Indianapolis and Philadelphia have proposed that both teams must have an opportunity to possess the ball in overtime. The powerful competition committee chaired by Falcons President Rich McKay has brought both of those suggestions to ownership for consideration and a vote this week.
UNDATED (AP) — New York Yankees star slugger Aaron Judge will soon get a proposal for a long-term contract extension. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman says the offer will be made before opening day, with further negotiations possible. Cashman added that contract talks will not continue into the season. Judge said Saturday he was "pretty sure" he doesn't want to negotiate a new contract during the season. The outfielder turns 30 next month and is eligible to become a free agent after the World Series.
