SALT LAKE CITY — Utah health officials reported 35 COVID-19 deaths on Wednesday, along with 119 new cases.

Of the deaths reported, 31 occurred before Feb. 23, according to the Utah Department of Health. Officials have said the decrease in COVID-19 cases provided time to evaluate previous death certificates and deaths found in that process are being reported throughout this week.

The rolling, seven-day average for new positive tests is now 126 per day, a number that's continuing to decrease after the omicron variant surged significantly in January. The seven-day average for positive tests is currently 4.7%.

The health department also reported another 3,013 people who were tested for COVID-19 and 6,424 who were vaccinated against the disease, bringing the total number of people in Utah who have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine to 2,250,264. The state has tested nearly 5 million people, utilizing 9.3 million tests, the data show.

School children accounted for nine of the new cases reported Wednesday.

Currently, 120 people are hospitalized throughout the state with COVID-19, with 20 of those patients in intensive care units, according to health officials.

Utah has seen a total of 4,645 COVID-19 deaths, although the Utah Department of Health reports that 4,434 of those deaths are confirmed and the remaining are considered probable.

The average age of Utahns who have died from COVID-19 is 71.3, and more than 70% of the deaths occurred in individuals who were older than 65-years-old. Of those who died, 81.6% were either over 65 or had a pre-existing condition and were considered "high risk." Men account for 60.7% of the deaths, while women account for 38.9%.
