UNDATED (AP) — The matchup between Hall of Fame coaches Mike Krzyzewski (shuh-SHEF'-skee) of Duke and Tom Izzo of Michigan State highlights the final day of the NCAA Tournament's opening weekend. This will be the sixth time they've met in the tournament, making it the most common coaching matchup in event history. Krzyzewski and Duke are 3-2 in those games and 12-3 overall against Izzo and his Spartans. Today's game will determine whether Coach K's farewell tour will continue on to San Francisco for the West Region semifinals, or Izzo will send his longtime friend into retirement and take seventh-seeded Michigan State back to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2019.

BOSTON (AP) — Private investigators hired by David Ortiz say a Dominican drug trafficker who was jealous of the Red Sox star arranged to have Ortiz shot at a Dominican nightclub in 2019. Ortiz was seriously wounded in the attack. The Boston Globe reports that the findings by former Boston police commissioner Edward Davis contradict the theory of the crime developed by Dominican prosecutors. Dominican authorities have said the intended target was a man who was sharing a table with Ortiz when he was shot. An attorney for the accused drug trafficker, César Peralta, denied that he had any involvement in the shooting.

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) — The Minnesota Twins and right-handed reliever Joe Smith have finalized a one-year contract. The move gives Minnesota a veteran arm for a bullpen in need of more depth. Smith pitched in 50 combined games last season for Houston and Seattle. He posted a 4.99 ERA in 39 2/3 innings. The side-arm thrower has pitched for seven major league teams over 15 years with a career 3.09 ERA and a .229 opponent batting average. Twins relievers ranked 20th in baseball last season with a 4.39 ERA.

SAKHIR, Bahrain (AP) — Formula One champion Max Verstappen's title defense turned into a nightmare when the Red Bull star retired near the end of the Bahrain Grand Prix. Ferrari clinched a 1-2 with Charles Leclerc winning ahead of teammate Carlos Sainz Jr. Seven-time F1 champion Lewis Hamilton took an unexpected third place after Sergio Perez's Red Bull also retired with the finish line in sight as the race finished under a yellow flag.

MERIBEL, France (AP) — Mikaela Shiffrin's standout World Cup season has ended by letting the giant slalom title slip away to Tessa Worley. Shiffrin was the first-run leader with a 0.82-second advantage. As the final racer of the women's season, she needed to win the race to clinch a victory in the giant slalom standings. Instead, her time was the slowest of the 24 second-run finishers and she placed seventh. That let France's Worley use the 50 points she earned for placing fourth to end atop the giant slalom standings.
