NORTH OGDEN — An Ogden man was charged Monday with driving drunk and hitting a man and his 5-year-old grandson with a car over the weekend.
Robert Earl Hyde, 44, was charged Monday in Ogden's 2nd District Court with two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol and causing serious bodily injury, third-degree felonies, and operating a vehicle without an owner's security, a class C misdemeanor.
Police were dispatched to the scene of a car crash in North Ogden on Saturday, and found that the two had suffered "serious injuries" in an auto-pedestrian crash. The man, 55, "will likely have to have a leg amputated" while the child was flown via helicopter to Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City, according to charging documents.
During the investigation, Hyde admitted he was the driver, and police say they could smell alcohol on him, the charges state. Police took Hyde back to the North Ogden Police Department where they administered a field sobriety test.
Hyde submitted to a breath test and police say he had a blood-alcohol content of 0.284%, over five times the legal limit in Utah, the charging documents say.
Court records do not indicate whether Hyde is in police custody, though a Weber County judge has signed off on an order to hold Hyde in jail without bail. As of Monday, he was not listed in online booking records for the Weber County Jail.
