SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake police are asking for the public's help in identifying a man believed to have critically injured a woman.

About 4:45 p.m. Sunday, a man went to a residence in the area of 850 S. West Temple. A woman who lives at the residence told police she let the man inside.

"The woman described the man as being homeless. There's no information at this time that indicates the woman or (attacker) knew each other," according to a statement from police.

The man then attacked the woman, leaving her with a neck injury. The woman called a neighbor who then called 911.

"Officers arrived on scene and located the woman and found her with a critical injury and bleeding heavily," police said.

Detectives initially could not tell what caused the woman's injury. Salt Lake police declined Monday to say whether investigators believe a weapon was used or what caused the heavy bleeding. Information about what prompted the attack was also unavailable.

The woman was taken to a local hospital where police say she underwent emergency surgery. On Monday, the woman remained hospitalized but was "stable," police said.

No information about the attacker was immediately released. Anyone with information on the case is asked to call police at 801-799-3000.
