GUNNISON — A gun was found in a restroom at Gunnison Valley High School on Friday, school district officials said.

The weapon was found prior to the start of the school day, according to a statement from the South Sanpete School District alerting parents of the situation.

"We have located the owner of the weapon and it appears it was inadvertently left in the restroom. However, we continue to investigate the situation and will take appropriate actions," the statement said.

A district spokesman declined Friday to say whether the owner of the gun was a school employee, a student, or someone else, nor would he say who found it. However, the person who found the weapon was praised for "doing the right thing" and alerting school administrators.

The case was still being investigated Friday by district administrators and the Gunnison Police Department.

"Since this happened prior to school, neither our students nor faculty were in any danger. We appreciate your patience as we work to investigate this situation," the district said in its brief statement.
