SALT LAKE CITY — Police arrested a convicted sex offender over the weekend after they say he sexually abused a woman with a diminished mental capacity.

Gregory Bane, 58, of Salt Lake City, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail Sunday for investigation of forcible sodomy and forcible sexual abuse.

Around 7:20 a.m. Sunday, police were called to investigate a sexual assault and paramedics later drove a woman to a local hospital for a sexual assault forensic exam, according to a statement from Salt Lake police.

The woman told police that Bane came into her room and was giving her a back rub when he touched her inappropriately before sexually assaulting her, according to a police booking affidavit. Police say the woman has a diminished mental capacity and suffers from epilepsy. Bane is currently on parole at the time of his arrest, the affidavit says.

Bane told police he "knew what he had done was wrong due to her diminished mental capacity," according to the affidavit.

Court records show Bane pleaded guilty to sodomy on a child in October 1994 and was sentenced in 1995 to a minimum of 15 years in prison. Records from the Utah Board of Pardons and Parole indicate Bane was granted parole in 2009, only to have it revoked in 2011. He was most recently released from prison in August 2020.

Bane is being held without bond at the Salt Lake County Jail.
