ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Nature is scary.
If you attended any overnight camp or school hike when you were a kid, you probably remember all the "scared straight" lectures you got about how nature can hurt you.
Additionally, if you did nature activities in a place that included moose (such as in Utah), you got even more lectures. And rightly so.
The average bull moose stands from about 4.6 feet to 6.9 feet, weighing in at 900 to1,200 pounds. But that's an average, so some are much, much bigger. Additionally, they're territorial animals that can run up to 35 mph, and they have massive antlers that they know how to use.
That's a lot of wild animal coming at you if you get in the way. And that's a lot of fear to contain if you come face to face with one of the creatures.
This featured video is about a moose encounter that was moments away from man losing to beast.
Alaska man Curtis Phelps was taking trash to a shed on Jan. 17, 2020. That's when a bull moose ambles into the frame of the porch cam video. Phelps' back is turned as the moose gets closer and, for just a few moments, it turns into a horror movie where the victim doesn't turn around until it's too late.
Luckily, Phelps did catch sight of the moose, right as the creature started picking up speed in an aggressive manner. But Phelps keeps his cool, turns around, and closes himself inside the shed moments before the moose gets to him.
Phelps may appear to be cool and calm, but I bet you $4 that his heart was pounding wildly as he hid out in his shed.
The moose quickly lost interest when Phelps was no longer in view, and now Phelps has a great anecdote to tell at parties instead of a massive hospital bill (or worse).
