SANDY — A SWAT team member is out of surgery and expected to recover after being shot while officers were serving a warrant in Sandy on Wednesday morning.
The person for whom the warrant was being served was also shot by police during the incident.
The Sandy Police Department's SWAT team was serving the search warrant in a drugs case on a unit at the the Arcadia Apartments, 222 W. Harrison Street (8990 South), just before 5 a.m. Wednesday.
When they got to the apartments, officers were immediately met with gunfire, Sandy police said in a tweet. They returned fire and the subject of the warrant was shot, police said.
"At some point, as they entered the apartment, an officer was struck with gunfire. And then an occupant of the apartment was also struck with gunfire. Both were transported to the hospital in stable condition, non-life threatening injuries. Sounds like our officer is going to be OK," said Sandy Police Sgt. Clay Swensen.
Police have not said how many officers fired shots, how many civilians were involved, or how many shots were fired during the incident.
As of 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, the SWAT officer was out of surgery and had stabilized, police said. The officer, who was not identified, is expected to recover.
Further information about the shooting, including the condition of the male warrant subject who was shot, has not been released. It is also unknown if the injured person was the lone occupant of the apartment where police were serving the warrant.
The shooting will be investigated by a team that consists of officers from several agencies. Salt Lake City and Cottonwood Heights officers were seen at the apartment complex Wednesday.
