(PonyEx)

If you're someone with an economy car—or no car at all—you know the frustration of going to the store and finding something you love, only to realize you have no way of getting it home.

From trees, to couches, to mattresses, to wood planks or a yard statue, you know the struggle of getting them to fit in your car. Typically, that's when you'd ask about shipping options. But if you find an awesome vintage armchair from the thrift store on the other side of town, you're probably out of luck for shipping.

In true Utah fashion, the innovative spirit of Dave Nelson and Mary Bevan inspired them to create a local solution. PonyEx is a Utah on-demand delivery service that can deliver your odds and ends for a small fee. So go ahead, buy that lifesize replica of the Game of Thrones Iron Throne!

How it works

With a business model similar to Uber or Doordash, you get on the PonyEx app and request a delivery. You'll get to decide what kind of transportation your item will need—will it fit in a car, truck, pickup, or trailer best?

You can also choose your delivery time frame. If you're not in a rush, you could choose same-day delivery or even schedule it up to 7 days in advance. If you've got something you need to get to your house quickly, choose expedited delivery (it should arrive in under two hours!).

Once the driver accepts your request, you'll be able to track them to your location. Then load the item up in their car or truck and make sure it's secure for transport. The driver will then meet you at your destination where you'll unload your item. You will also be able to request driver help loading and unloading if you don't wish to do it all yourself.

This isn't a business like Amazon or UPS—in fact, it's everything they don't do. You don't drop your item off at a store or order it from a service. This is for everything in between.

With the exception of animals, people, items of exceptional value or hazardous materials, you can have anything delivered. Here are just a few examples of ways you could use PonyEx to deliver for you:

  • Dropping donations off at a thrift store
  • Picking up a kitchen table you bought from KSL Classifieds
  • Store pick ups that you just don't have time to get to
  • Estate sale finds
  • Prescription medications
  • Unexpected delivery needs for your small business
  • Landscaping gravel, dirt, trees or bushes from your local nursery

Little deliveries and time-sensitive deliveries are also on the list of possibilities with PonyEx. For example, you could have a driver pick up some prescriptions from your pharmacy if you're not going to make it there before it closes. Just make sure you give a two-hour notice for anything you need quickly!

As of May 2021, PonyEx is running deliveries across the Wasatch Front from Ogden to Sanatquin.

Drive for PonyEx

If you have a car, truck, or trailer that's just taking up space in your garage, you can make some extra change by driving for PonyEx. With a schedule as flexible as you'd like, you can set your own hours and work as little or as often as you wish.

Perhaps the best part for those who hate small talk, is that drivers are only responsible for transporting the items—customers are not allowed to ride with drivers. So if you prefer to drive around town listening to your favorite music or true crime podcast, nobody is stopping you! You can also choose if you want to help load and unload. So if you've got a big truck, but don't want to take on any extra manual labor, that is up to you! Or if you've got a small car and want to stay busy with PonyEx, sign up as a helper where you can meet another driver to help them load or unload.

PonyEx is set up with direct deposit, so drivers can be paid weekly for their trips. Drivers have to have insurance, registration, and a valid license to drive for PonyEx. To learn more about vehicle requirements, please visit the PonyEx website.

The possibilities of delivery

With this new service, the possibilities of what you could easily deliver are virtually unlimited. So whether you don't want to rent a truck for a day or you just want to get your item delivered quickly, PonyEx is a great solution for you.
