MIDVALE — A man was arrested over the weekend and accused of making a false report after police say he called emergency dispatchers to say that an officer had been shot, prompting a large response from police all over the valley.
Charles Ashely Duroni, 50, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on Sunday for investigation of making a false alarm alleging an imminent threat and intoxication.
About 3 p.m., more than 25 officers from jurisdictions across Salt Lake County responded to the area of 7400 S. State on a report that an officer had been shot, according to a police affidavit. Nearly 20 officers from Unified police alone responded to the call.
"Charles told dispatch the officer had been shot by a man with an assault rifle, thus responding police agencies ran emergency code with lights and sirens. This put the public and officers in immediate danger," the affidavit states.
But when officers arrived, there was no evidence of a shooting.
"Eventually it was learned Mr. Charles Duroni called in the call. Charles is diagnosed as schizophrenic and frequently uses drugs. … Charles admitted to using crack cocaine. He then took some of his prescribed medication to level out the effects of the cocaine and his schizophrenia," the affidavit states. "Charles was just released from the University of Utah Hospital for mental issues. It is clear he is still in mental crisis and needs to be seen by a psychologist."
