SALT LAKE CITY — The Beehive State is on its way to having 25 temples for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the most, by far, of any state. Here's an update on where temples have been announced and how construction is going on those being built or renovated.
Syracuse Utah Temple
The Syracuse Utah Temple was announced in April 2020 and will be built on a 12-acre plot at the intersection of 2500 West and 1025 South in Syracuse. A groundbreaking is scheduled for the three-story, 89,000-square-foot temple in June.
Deseret Peak Utah Temple
The Deseret Peak Utah Temple will be built at the intersection of East 2400 North and North 400 East in Tooele. It was announced in April 2019 and was originally slated to be built in Erda; however, in January 2020, the church changed its plans. The groundbreaking for the three-story, 70,000-square-foot temple is scheduled for May.
Lindon Utah Temple
The Lindon Utah Temple will be located near 800 East and Center Street. The three-story, 81,000-square-foot temple was announced in October 2020 and a groundbreaking has not yet been scheduled.
A rendering of the Lindon Utah Temple has not been released.
Taylorsville Utah Temple
Orem Utah Temple
The Orem Utah Temple will be located at 1471 S. Geneva Road, west of the University Parkway exit of I-15. The three-story, 70,000-square-foot temple was announced in October 2019 and construction began in September 2020.
Layton Utah Temple
The three-story, 87,00-square-foot Layton Utah Temple is being built near the corner of Oak Hills Drive and Rosewood Lane. It was announced in April 2018 and construction began in May 2020.
Saratoga Springs Utah Temple
The Saratoga Springs Utah Temple was first announced in October 2017 and construction began in October 2019. The three-story temple will be about 87,000 square feet, with an adjacent 21,000-square-foot meetinghouse on the plot. It will be located at 879 S. Ensign Dr., near Lake Mountain Middle School in the new Beacon Pointe subdivision of the city.
Red Cliffs Utah Temple
The three-story, 90,000-square-foot Red Cliffs Utah Temple will be located northeast of 3000 East and 1580 South in St. George and become the second temple in the city. It was announced in October 2018 and construction began in November 2020.
Salt Lake Temple
As of March, work to remove the temple's current roof and an attached temporary cover is about halfway completed. The South Visitors' Center was demolished last year and the Church Office Building Plaza will be getting a new landscaped look, complete with flags and gardens over the next year.
Work on the temple's foundation began in the fall of 2020 and its renovation plans include making the structure able to withstand a large earthquake.
St. George Utah Temple
Work on the St. George Temple renovation project began at the end of 2019 and is slated to be completed in 2022 when the temple will once again reopen.
Since the project began a little over a year ago, crews have demolished additions to the historic temple added in the 1970s and added a concrete foundation to the north entrance of the building. Construction on the outside of the temple will mirror the 1870s design of the pioneer building.
On the interior, the temple's HVAC system has been upgraded to replace a decades-old system.
