SALT LAKE CITY — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will break ground on two new temples in Utah this summer, officials announced Tuesday.

The groundbreaking for the Syracuse Utah Temple will take place in June with Elder Kevin R. Duncan of the Quorum of the Seventy presiding over the event. The Deseret Peak Utah Temple groundbreaking, which is in Tooele, will be held in May and Elder Brook P. Hales of the Quorum of the Seventy will preside over the event.

The temple in Syracuse is a three-story, 89,000 square-foot temple that was announced by President Russell M. Nelson in April of 2020. It will be located on a 12-acre plot at the intersection of 2500 West and 1025 South.

The temple in Tooele, which will be west of the intersection of 2400 North and 400 West, was recently renamed and its location changed. It was initially planned to be built in Erda, with a residential community around the temple site. But the church decided to change its plans following pushback from the community about the high-density housing construction.

The three-story temple in Tooele will be about 70,000 square feet, with a 20,000 square-foot meetinghouse slated for construction on the site as well.

The Beehive State has more than 20 temples either announced, under construction, under renovation or operational. Construction for new temples in Layton, Orem, Saratoga Springs, St. George, and Taylorsville are also underway.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, attending the groundbreaking services in-person will be limited to only those invited.
