LEHI — A child was transported by medical helicopter in critical condition following a crash on southbound 1-15 in Lehi on Thursday, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.

According to Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Nick Street, a Kia Soul was traveling southbound on I-15 around 4:30 p.m. when, for unknown reasons, it traveled outside of its lane and hit a barrier wall on the left side of the interstate.

Street said that the car then traveled across the interstate and hit the barrier on the other side near the off-ramp for Lehi's Main Street.

An 8-year-old child had no pulse at the scene. Street said that emergency responders were able to regain the child's pulse before the medical helicopter arrived. The two other occupants, a male driver and the child's 8-year-old twin, were taken to the hospital by ground ambulance in stable condition.

UHP is investigating the cause of the crash as well as whether the child was properly restrained, Street said.

Utah Department of Transportation officials advised drivers to use an alternate route after the interstate was closed. Southbound I-15 at Lehi Main Street was shut down due to the crash, UDOT announced in a tweet just before 5:30 p.m. The freeway was reopened around 7:21 p.m., but significant residual delays remained afterward.
