257 more COVID-19 cases, 5 deaths reported Monday in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah's number of COVID-19 cases increased by 257 on Monday, with five more deaths reported, according to the Utah Department of Health.

The state now estimates there are 16,738 active cases of the disease in Utah. There were 4,493 more vaccinations as of Monday, the health department reported.

The rolling seven-day average number of positive cases per day is now at 636, according to the health department. The positive test rate per day for that time period reported with the "people over people" method is now 11%. The positive test rate per day seven-day average calculated with the "test over test" method is now 5.1%.

There are 214 COVID-19 patients currently hospitalized in Utah, including 89 in intensive care, state data shows. About 66% of all intensive care unit beds in Utah are now occupied, including about 68% of the state's 16 referral hospitals. About 47% of all non-ICU hospital beds in the state are filled.

A total of 721,029 vaccines have been administered in the state, up from 716,536 Sunday. Of those, 256,554 are second doses of the vaccine.

The new numbers indicate a 0.07% increase in positive cases since Sunday. Of the 2,208,924 people tested for COVID-19 in Utah so far, 16.8% have tested positive for COVID-19. The number of total tests conducted since the beginning of the pandemic is now 3,813,782, up 6,517 since Sunday, state data shows. Of those, 3,133 were tests of people who had not previously been tested for COVID-19.

The five deaths reported Monday include:

  • An Iron County man who was between the ages of 65 and 84 and was hospitalized when he died
  • A Kane County man who was between the ages of 65 and 84 and was hospitalized when he died
  • Two Salt Lake County men who were between the ages of 65 and 84 and were hospitalized when they died
  • A Salt Lake County man who was between the ages of 45 and 64 and was hospitalized when he died

Monday's totals give Utah 371,492 total confirmed cases, with 14,724 total hospitalizations and 1,940 total deaths from the disease. A total of 352,814 Utah COVID-19 cases are now considered recovered, according to the health department.

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox is scheduled to provide his weekly pandemic update at 11 a.m. Thursday, according to his office.
