HIGH POINT, N.C. (AP) — Police have identified a woman found dead inside a home in North Carolina after a lengthy standoff with a gunman who wounded four officers before he was killed.
High Point police said they found the body of Blanca Cadavid inside the home after the 11-hour standoff on Friday, along with two children who were not physically injured, news outlets reported.
According to the medical examiner, Cadavid was killed eight to ten hours before officers discovered her body, putting her death around the time police heard a gunshot while in the area on an unrelated call.
Police encountered Josue Drumond-Cruz in the front yard and tried to communicate with him but he was uncooperative, going into the home and coming back outside with a rifle.
A standoff ensued, and about four hours later, with no contact from the suspect, officers tried to enter the home and Drumond-Cruz opened fire on them, striking three High Point officers, Police Chief Travis Stroud previously said.
Stroud said Drumond-Cruz also fired shots from the house periodically throughout the standoff.
"We had a lot of gunfire coming from inside the house throughout the morning," he said.
About 10:15 a.m., the suspect shot at tactical officers who were assisting from the nearby Greensboro Police Department, and they returned fire, killing him, Stroud said.
Investigators later revealed that a Greensboro officer was shot and wounded in the final exchange. All four officers have since been released from the hospital.
Investigators are still working to determine the gunman's motives. Police have not released more details about the woman and children.
