THE DRIVE-THRU — Having kids is the best — not necessarily because they bring you so much joy. Truth be told, they aggravate me most of the time, but I still love them even when I don't like them.
The real joy comes from the stuff they say. The stuff you're not ready for and truthfully never will be ready for. Let me share a few examples from my own life.
A conversation with my son when he was 6 years old as I tried to change him out of his swimsuit in our backyard:
- Son: "I don't want to change here. Someone might see me."
- Me: "Maybe a squirrel, and they don't care."
- Son: "Yeah. Well, squirrels talk."
- Me: ...
- Son: "Yeah. They tell another squirrel, and then another, and then they tell someone."
Then there are the things that catch you completely off guard — like these responses I got from my kids when we asked what we should get for dessert:
- 10-year-old daughter: "Shaved ice!"
- 7-year-old son: "Ice cream!"
- 4-year-old daughter: "Maverik!"
Our 4-year-old is the classy one in the family.
We also have those moments that make us really upset in the moment. But when we take a minute to calm down, we realize how funny the situation was. Take the time my son clogged the toilet at church to the point there was a mini flood in the bathroom and I got to take that walk of shame through the building with a plunger, soaked shoes (that went in the garbage), and a scowl.
It's the same thing this mom experienced in this video.
The kids laugh is great. 😏😂 pic.twitter.com/YotmokxEqa

The mom and her little girl Ruby are at the drive-thru and mom is asking Ruby what she would like to eat. What ensues is absolute kid gold. I don't know why mom was filming, and many will assume it's fake. If it is fake, it's still hilarious and mom and Ruby are the best actors ever because I know that reaction from mom. I've lived it many times. And that laugh from Ruby is so pure it makes the video about 10 million times better.
I've watched this video a thousand times, and I'm excited for you to now see it because Ruby is my new hero.
Good luck to all you moms and dads out there. And to those without kids, I hope I haven't scared you off for good.
