SALT LAKE CITY — Utah Jazz guard Donovan Mitchell will sit out Wednesday night's game against the Dallas Mavericks after he was placed in the NBA's concussion protocol, the team announced.
Mitchell played 34 minutes in Tuesday's 108-94 win over the New York Knicks. While the Jazz didn't state when the injury occurred, Mitchell did take an elbow to the face during Tuesday's win and looked visibly shaken from the hit. He didn't however show any signs of a concussion until Wednesday morning.
"His first symptoms linking him to a possible concussion occurred this morning after the game against the New York Knicks last night," a Jazz statement says.
Mitchell leads the Jazz in scoring this season with 23.4 points per game to go along with 4.9 assists and 4.4 rebounds.
Utah enters Wednesday's game against the Mavericks on a nine-game winning streak and currently holds the second-best record (13-4) in the Western Conference and the league. The Jazz are within a half-game of the Los Angeles Lakers (14-4) for first place.
The Jazz said Mitchell will continue to be monitored as he progresses through concussion protocol.
With Mitchell out, the Jazz will use a different starting lineup for the first time this season.
