SALT LAKE CITY — Police arrested a Grantsville man who they say wanted to scare someone by firing 29 rounds from an AK-47 outside an apartment.
Kirk Neil Madsen, 41, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on Wednesday for investigation of 29 counts of illegal discharge of a firearm, failing to stop at the command of police and possession of a firearm by a restricted person.
On Tuesday, Madsen went to the Salt Lake apartment where the mother of his child lives. He knocked on the door but then thought he saw someone moving around inside and believed another person was inside the apartment with the woman, according to a police affidavit.
"Kirk said he grew impatient waiting for them to come outside so he fired off his AK-47 rifle once, which he said is a fully automatic rifle that cleared out an entire 30 round magazine, which had 29 rounds in it at the time. Kirk said he fired the rounds trying to scare the male who he thought was in the apartment with his child's mother," the affidavit states.
No one was injured by the shots.

Just as police were arriving, Madsen got into his car and left, even though "Kirk said the officers told him to stop and to stay there," the affidavit says.
Witnesses provided police with video they recorded of Madsen shortly after the shots were fired that allegedly shows him putting his rifle back in his car. When police questioned Madsen on Wednesday, he acknowledged he was not allowed to possess firearms due to a prior conviction, the affidavit states.
