SANDY — Members of a Sandy family escaped their burning home Tuesday, but not before one member suffered minor injuries.

The fire at 9681 S. Eastpoint Dr. (1485 East) was reported about 5:15 a.m. When fire crews arrived, there were flames already shooting out both the front and back of the house, said Sandy Fire Battalion Chief Chris Aston. Firefighters were forced to immediately go into a defensive mode, meaning they could only pour water onto it from the outside.

Two people inside the house, a father and son, were able to get out. One person had to be treated at a local hospital for minor burns but was later released, Aston said.

Investigators have not been able to get inside the house to start looking for a possible cause. But based on what the homeowners were saying, Aston said a heating device in the basement may have been bumped over or somehow accidentally ignited the fire.

The house is considered a complete loss, though an estimated dollar value was not available Tuesday.
