SALT LAKE CITY — The family of the man accused of killing Sherry Black a decade ago says they are "devastated" by their loved one's arrest, but their thoughts are also with Black's family.
On Monday, the family of Adam Antonio Spencer Durborow released a prepared statement to KSL through their attorney, Pona Sitake, marking the family's first public comments since Durborow's arrest on Oct. 10.
"It has never crossed our minds that the events from a horrific and tragic event nearly a decade ago would have involved a member of our family. While we are devastated with the apparent involvement of our son Adam's role in this event, we wish to simply express our condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of Sherry Black. We cannot fathom the pain and sorrow they've felt through the last decade and we want to convey our sincerest sympathies for the renewed pain and suffering they will continue to endure. The ripple effects of this tragedy will be felt through the lives of all involved, including our own lives."
The family asked for privacy as they "navigate this foreign and dark time" and continue to mourn "for all those involved."
"We know that peace and healing may not be something achieved in this lifetime, but we send our love and prayers to all those who are grieving at this time."
The letter was simply signed, "The Durborow Family."
Police believe Adam Durborow was 19 when he entered B&W Billiards and Books in South Salt Lake on Nov. 30, 2010, and fatally stabbed Black, 64, the mother-in-law of former Larry H. Miller Group CEO Greg Miller.
Court records show Durborow, now 29, lived approximately a mile away from the bookstore at the time of the incident. Police have not given a motive for the crime. And despite being in trouble several times as a juvenile, Durborow had maintained a minor criminal history since becoming an adult, according to court records.
Durborow was being held in the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of aggravated murder and aggravated burglary. As of Monday, The Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office had not filed formal charges.
