WEST VALLEY CITY — A man who police say fired 11 rounds at a fleeing victim, striking him once from behind, was arrested Sunday.

Casey Jack Demie, 18, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of 10 counts of illegally shooting, aggravated assault, two counts of possession of a firearm by a restricted person, interfering with an arrest, failing to stop at the command of law enforcement, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

West Valley police were called Sunday night to the Overlook Apartments, 4635 S. 2890 West, on a report of shots fired, according to a police affidavit. As officers responded to the area, a man with a gunshot wound to the back of his shoulder showed up at the emergency room of a local hospital, the affidavit states.

Officers checking the apartment complex located a vehicle that matched the description given by the victim. When officers tried to talk to the people inside, Demie ran and police chased after him, the affidavit states. The officers were able to catch Demie and arrest him.

"When he was in custody, he was found to be carrying two handguns, both 9 mm. ... One of those firearms was a 9 mm with an extended magazine that held 30 rounds. The magazine had 19 rounds in it," according to the affidavit. "Casey Demie fired a 9 mm handgun 11 times at a person and vehicle striking the victim one time in the shoulder then attempting to flee the area."
