WEST VALLEY CITY — A pregnant mother and her baby have died from injuries suffered in a Thursday crash.
The 29-year-old woman was transported to a hospital in critical condition where doctors delivered her baby girl via a Caesarean section, according to a news release from the West Valley City Police Department.
The woman later died from her injuries and her infant was flown to Primary Children's Hospital in critical condition, West Valley City Police Lt. Amy Mauer said. On Saturday morning, KSL TV's Ashley Moser confirmed with family members that the baby had passed away.
The woman was reported to be eight months pregnant at the time of the crash. She was identified Friday as Shelby Boyce, of West Valley City.
At about 7 p.m., a 28-year-old male driver and Boyce, his wife, were westbound on 3500 South in a Mitsubishi Lancer approaching the intersection of Bangerter Highway.
The pair went through a green light at the same time an 18-year-old man in a southbound Subaru Forrester reportedly ran a red light, colliding with the passenger side of the Mitsubishi Lancer.
An officer happened to be near the scene of the crash when it occurred and immediately helped all parties. Boyce was extricated from the car and transported to the hospital in extremely critical condition. Despite multiple life-saving measures, she later died from her injuries, according to the news release.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and Mauer said Thursday police are still investigating if distracted driving played any role. Impairment is not suspected as a possible factor in the crash, according to the Friday news release.
Both the 18-year-old and 28-year-old men were transported to a hospital in stable condition.
