MIDVALE — A man was shot and killed by police Friday evening after authorities said he shot at police who were pursuing another man.

Police had been searching for Joseph Schultz, 24, of West Valley City, and found him at a Motel 6 in Midvale, according to Unified Police Sgt. Melody Cutler; Schultz was wanted in connection with robberies, drive-by shootings and fleeing police. Schultz drove away, Cutler said, fleeing again in a car with three passengers, causing a pursuit up 7200 South until Bingham Junction Boulevard.

"Officers found the vehicle, they spiked the car, the car continued to flee from them running over the sidewalks, through barrels through this construction zone where it came to rest here in this intersection," said Cutler.

Schultz, along with a female passenger, fled southbound from the scene. A 22-year-old male passenger, later identified as Matthew C. Knowlden, showed a handgun and began shooting at police, according to Cutler. Police returned fire; Knowlden was transported to an area hospital and died from his injures.

No officers were harmed during the incident, Cutler said.

Unified Police said Schultz and the female passenger are both in custody. UPD later confirmed that a fourth person fled from the vehicle and was hiding near the scene of the shooting; that person is now also in custody but has not been identified.

The two additional passengers were identified as Jeanie Joyce Brereton, 19, and Sasha Anne Jones, 29, on Sunday.

Protocol Team 1 is investigating the shooting.

Just before 7 p.m. Friday, UDOT tweeted that all directions of travel at 700 West and 7200 South in Midvale were closed near CHG Healthcare Services. The intersection has been cleared as of Saturday morning.
