WEST VALLEY CITY — A man who police say isn’t allowed to own a firearm accidentally shot another man while he was cleaning a gun on Wednesday evening.

About 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, West Valley City police responded to 4320 S. Stafford Way on a report of a man with a gunshot wound, according to a tweet from the agency.

Police initially weren’t sure how the shooting occurred and believed the man had possibly shot himself.

However, police later contacted a second man who was there at the time of the shooting. He told investigators he was cleaning the gun when it accidentally went off, shooting the other man, police said. He was identified Friday as Antonio Carreon, 35, according to police.

Carreon initially told investigators he was not there during the shooting, but later admitted that he was handling the firearm when it accidentally went off, shooting the victim, according to a jail report. Carreon, the victim and a third witness have all maintained that the shooting was accidental, police said.

Carreon was previously convicted of a felony, making him a restricted person who is prohibited from owning a gun, police said. He was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail Wednesday for investigation of possession of a dangerous weapon, according to police. He's since been released with instructions to check in with the court on a regular basis and other restrictions, jail documents indicate.

The man who was shot is an adult between the ages of 20 and 40, and was taken to a hospital in critical, but stable, condition, according to West Valley City Police Sgt. Jaron Averett. He is expected to survive. The man was not identified.
