CLINTON — One man died overnight and another is in custody after police say they became involved in a shootout that also injured a police dog.

The incident began about 2 a.m. Saturday, according to a Roy City Police Department news release. A Roy City police officer initiated a stop on a vehicle for a traffic violation and had a brief discussion with the two occupants, both white men, before they fled, according to the release.

Officers pursued the vehicle "briefly" but terminated the pursuit, the release says.

A short time later, officers learned the vehicle was stopped in a large field near 2640 N. 1700 West in Clinton, according to police. "As officers approached the vehicle," the department wrote, "they were subjected to gunfire from one of the suspects. Officers returned fire."

One of the men in the vehicle is deceased, police said; the other is in custody. Police have identified the men but said their names and ages will not be released at this time.

A police dog named Mik was struck in the face by gunfire. He is being treated at an animal emergency room and is expected to survive, police said. Mik will not work with police for at least six weeks while recovering and will be re-evaluated afterward.

The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave. The Weber County Attorney's Office and Davis County Attorney's Office have taken over the investigation.

Officials said the number of officers who fired weapons and an exact timeline of events are "currently under investigation."
