460 more COVID-19 cases, 5 deaths reported in Utah Friday

Utah’s number of COVID-19 cases has increased by 460 from Thursday, with five more deaths reported, according to the Utah Department of Health.The health department now estimates there are 10,669 active cases of the disease in Utah. The rolling seven-day average number of positive cases per day is now at 441, according to the health department. State Sen. Deidre Henderson presumed positive for COVID-19

State Senator and Lt. Governor candidate for Spencer Cox, Deidre Henderson, is presumed positive for COVID-19 following positive test results from two immediate family members and her development of symptoms.

This week two members of my immediate family tested positive for COVID-19. I have now begun to show symptoms consistent with the virus and am presumed to be positive, though this will be confirmed when my test results are returned.

Weber State, SUU football put on hold as Big Sky postpones fall season to spring

There will be no football at Weber State or SUU this fall, as Big Sky Conference presidents voted to move the season to spring, conference officials announced Friday morning.The announcement came after presidents of the schools met Thursday afternoon to decide how to proceed with the season, which was set to kick off in the coming weeks.— Carter Williams, KSL.com

Salt Lake County dispersing $10 million in COVID-19 aid for schools

Salt Lake County isn’t “in the education business,” as Mayor Jenny Wilson put it, but she saw a need the county could fill.So as school districts prepare for reopening and grapple with uncertainty, Wilson said she’s been in talks with district superintendents to identify any needs that haven’t been met.To fill those needs — whether it be funding for more student laptops for at-home learning or additional staffing to assist teachers — she decided to set aside $10 million in federal COVID-19 relief funding to be funneled through the county to school districts.—Katie McKellar, KSL

Mitt Romney proposes coronavirus relief for rural communities, family farms

Rural communities, family farms and small businesses could see some financial relief from the COVID-19 outbreak under bipartisan legislation Sen. Virus aid talks on brink of collapse; sides 'very far apart'

Washington talks on vital COVID-19 rescue money are teetering on the brink of collapse after a marathon meeting in the Capitol generated lots of recriminations but little progress on the top issues confronting negotiators.“There’s a handful of very big issues that we are still very far apart" on, said Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin. US adds 1.8 million jobs in a sign that hiring has slowed

The United States added 1.8 million jobs in July, a pullback from the gains of May and June and evidence that the resurgent coronavirus is stalling hiring and slowing an economic rebound.The unemployment rate did decline in July from 11.1% to 10.2%, though that still exceeds the highest rate during the 2008-2009 Great Recession.— Associated Press
