MAGNA — One bicyclist was killed and another was critically injured after a crash on westbound state Route 201 in Magna early Thursday morning, authorities confirmed.

The crash took place at about 5:46 a.m. on S.R. 201 near 9200 West, according to the Utah Highway Patrol. A man and woman were riding on a tandem bicycle in the westbound lanes of the freeway, UHP said.

The bike veered to the right and crossed into the path of a white sedan that was traveling west, according to UHP. The sedan crashed into the bikers, and the man suffered fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was identified Friday as 66-year-old Moroni Leafty, of Magna, according to the highway patrol.

The woman was transported to Intermountain Medical Center with injuries and was listed in critical condition, UHP said. She has not been identified.

The driver of the sedan was not injured.

The crash remains under investigation, but UHP officials said the area where the crash occurred was dark at the time and had minimal lighting.

Westbound lanes of S.R. 201 were closed for most of the morning Thursday but have since reopened.
