NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE, England, Sep 17, 2004 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- A British study finds that young adults tend to eat more vegetables and fruit and less fat and sugar than children.
A research team at Newcastle University studied the diets of 200 children aged 11 and 12 and then returned to the same subjects 20 years later. They found a general trend towards healthier eating in the group of 30-somethings.
The study published in the journal Appetite found a number of influences on eating habits, including parents, partners and time or perceived time available for meal preparation. Generally, people who said their parents had a positive influence on them had healthier diets.
Amelia Lake, a nutritionist at the university, said that people under pressure may also believe that they do not have the time to prepare healthy meals.
There was one big difference between the sexes. About one-third of the study group, mostly men, said their partners improved their diets, while 10 percent, mostly women, said the opposite.
