The Utah Department of Transportation will soon pass the midway mark in the I-80 reconstruction project. First, crews have to pull a few all-nighters.
Week by week, the ride improves on I-80. By Tuesday morning, the project will be halfway done and all traffic will travel on new pavement, three lanes in both directions.
"We originally planned to do that next weekend, but we changed some things around and were able to cram that into this one weekend closure to help minimize delays," Construction Manager Mark Allington said.
Each of the next five nights, westbound lanes from State Street to 700 East will close from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. on the weekdays, 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. this weekend. "This is to facilitate putting in the overhead sign structures for the new freeway," Allington explained.
You'll see those sign poles lifted and bolted into place.
There's also big news for Sugar House residents: The eastbound off-ramp at 1300 East reopens Tuesday. But the eastbound off-ramp at 700 East closes.
By this time next year, the project should be done. But driving faster won't get us there sooner. "We're still having tons and tons of people going 70-plus miles an hour through here. Highway patrol is out patrolling and ticketing everybody they can," Allington said.
