With childhood obesity on the rise, I agree with PBS, Nick Jr. and the Disney Channel on coming up with programs that get youngsters off the couch and ready to move. Older children these days would rather play with video games and watch television than play outside. If a parent starts at an early age making exercise fun instead of work, maybe obesity will decline.
Parents also need to focus on programs their kids are watching, making sure they are educational and interactive. Preschoolers love to sing, jump and dance. It pleases me to see that children's television networks are not only worried about ratings but also the health of our children. I have a 2-year-old niece and she has learned Spanish and how to do a somersault while watching her favorite show, "Dora the Explorer."
