COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - UNLV sophomore Erica Helms and Utah senior Morgan Warburton have been named the Mountain West Conference Women's Basketball Co-Players of the Week.
Helms averaged a team-best 17.5 points per game while leading UNLV to a 2-0 week, giving the Lady Rebels their first 3-0 start since the 2002-03 season. In a win over Sacramento State on Tuesday, she scored a career-high tying 19 points for the second-straight game off of 6-of-11 shooting, including going 2-for-4 from three-point range. She also added six assists and two steals in the win. In UNLV's 66-53 win over Nevada, Reno, the Antioch, Calif., native was 5-for-9 from the floor and finished with a game-high tying 16 points. For the week, Helms averaged four assists, two rebounds and 1.5 steals, while shooting 55 percent from the floor, 42.9 percent from three-point range, and made 10-of-13 free throws for 73.9 percent.
Warburton, from Helper, Utah, led her team in scoring last week, averaging 21.5 points per game. Against Jackson State, the guard recorded seven rebounds and five assists, while shooting 8-for-16 from the field and 2-for-4 from three-point range. Versus South Dakota State, Warburton, who was playing with four fouls in the second half, hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to one with 10 minutes remaining. She was one point shy of a career-high with 25 points on 10-of-16 shooting from the field, 3-of-4 from three-point range and 2-of-3 from the line. She was second on the team in rebounding in both games.
This marks Helms' first career weekly honor and Warburton's fifth.
