South Dakota government is setting up a new Web site aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles.
The site gives information about ways to change eating habits and get more exercise, Governor Mike Rounds said January 31, 2005, in announcing the site. Whether it's reaching for an apple or taking the stairs, everyone can take small steps toward healthier living, the governor said.
"We are as a nation overweight," Rounds said. "We as a nation are spending more money on healthcare all the time. The two are in tandem."
Sixty percent of South Dakota adults and 33% of children are overweight or obese, the governor said. But when those numbers decrease everyone wins, he said.
"If you keep your weight down your healthcare cost will go down," said Rounds.
The Web site has several links for kids, teens, adults, and senior citizens. It contains information the Department of Health has put together from a number of different sources.
"It's a very important first step," South Dakota Health Secretary Doneen Hollingsworth said of the new Web site. "It's putting resources in a place that a lot of different people can access. Increasing physical activity and improving nutrition of South Dakotans are two really easy things, but they will have a profound impact on us all."
Round said the site is a work in progress and more resources will be added regularly. This article was prepared by Physician Law Weekly editors from staff and other reports. Copyright 2005, Physician Law Weekly via LawRx.com.
